Carpet Kit

from $200 E.P. by Yorktown Lads

about

This is a personal and very 'inside' song written for probably my oldest friend Dawn Caron, with whom I carpooled to school every day from kindergarten through most of high school. The soundtrack of our drive was an important part of our lives, and all the things mentioned in the song are references to places, music, school, and the other kids in our carpool over the years.

lyrics

CARPET KIT
a song for Dawn

From the driveway honks the horn
Oh my gosh it must be morning
Grab your lunch and grab your books
But KFWB’s got no hooks
Our redemption comes next week
Pack of blank tape smells so sweet
Math homework is adding running times
Exactly filling up both sides
Cuz my mom drives this week
The sounds are gonna be sweet

Jump into my carpet kit
We’re playing all the trendy hits
Or maybe not, but the tape deck’s blasting
Cruising over Friendly Hills
Maybe 605 or Workman Mill
Doesn’t matter cos we got the tunes

Learning in a sunless nook
Everyday we read the Book
Seasons changed like Ore to Paul
Backward masking we played them all
Tater Tots, Milkbones, we had it made
Under the j acaranda shade
If I smile and remember when
The Trinity river flows again
And I’m Bumping down Garo street
A quick rewind before we meet

Jump into my carpet kit (Laura Ingalls, Jimmy Slash)
We’re playing all the trendy hits (Duran Duran and Adam Ant)
Or maybe not, but the tape deck’s blasting
Cruising over Friendly Hills (Pac-man, Raiders, Atari)
Maybe 605 or Workman Mill (mornings reeking of kimchee)
Doesn’t matter cos we got the tunes, so

Jump into my carpet kit (Dawn and Shari, Darcy, Todd)
We’re playing all the trendy hits (Xavier was pretty odd)
Or maybe not, but the tape deck’s blasting
Cruising over Friendly Hills (Trisha, Darren and Michelle)
Maybe 605 or Workman Mill (Eugene Hong, Brian Litrell)
Doesn’t matter as longs as we’ve got the tunes.
Doesn’t matter as longs as we’ve got the tunes.
